I can't go through this week without mentioning where I am NOT. For the first time in the past 11 years, I am not at Summer Solstice. For those who don't know what that is, it is hard to explain but I'll give a simple overview. Each year for the week of Summer Solstice, over a thousand people camp out on a mountain in New Mexico, catch up with old friends, do yoga, meditate, and live as a spiritual community. It includes 3 days of White Tantric Yoga – which is all day meditations that are 31 or 62 minutes long. It is an intense week – full of lots of challenge but also lots of really special moments.
So I'm not there this week. There are various reasons – work, finances... but mostly I just felt like it wasn't my time to go. Even though I am not there, it is very much in my mind and I find myself thinking of the many friends who are there right now. Today they are finishing up the third day of White Tantric. In my meditation today, I thought of them and felt the need to express appreciation for the effort this kind of practice involves.
The appreciation I have is for those who face themselves. It is not an easy task. I saw it in my own resistance today. I sat there, doing my meditation and getting to that place where the mind starts spitting out reasons to stop, to avoid, to run away. I thought of so many other things that were waiting to get done. I could work. I could check email, clean the house, eat, read a book....anything...other...than...face...myself. I have taught about (and felt!) this experience enough times to know that in that moment, that is exactly when you have to keep going. That is exactly the time that you absolutely must not stop. That is the wall you have to move through.
Even knowing that, I was itching to get out of it. It seems funny that there is so much resistance to just being still. There is so much frantic grasping at staying busy, being occupied, going, doing, distracting. For those who take this challenge every day, I want say that I appreciate you and the work that you do to live more awake, alive, and present – even when it is hard.
And I want to say that I appreciate all those friends who sit up on the mountain today – facing themselves, letting go of their baggage, and doing their part to create a more conscious world for us all.
Happy Summer Solstice.
