Microbursts!

Wow. What a weird day. I've been in the swirl of preparing for a 6 day training course that I am the administrator for and attending (Level 2 Teacher Training) that starts tomorrow. And the weather has created its own interesting swirl.

Last night we had a huge storm in central Phoenix. We had, what are apparently called microbursts, which are almost like tornados. Today our neighborhood is full of huge, uprooted trees and knocked over power lines.

My favorite tree in our yard was uprooted....

It landed on my car. Luckily, after excavation efforts by Mangala Sadhu Sangeet and Hari Jot, my car was found to be undamaged (minus some scratches.)

Just down the street, an enormous tree fell onto the ashram, where I work. That's my office right under the tree.

In case you are wondering how big that root and dirt base is...there's me and Satvinder giving some perspective.

We biked around the neighborhood this morning, checking out the carnage. Here's one of the Khalsa School campuses that has a mural on a wall that got smashed. This was significant to us because the little boy painted on that mural (kid on the right) is Mangala Sadhu Sangeet, as a child.

It did create quite the community feel as all the neighbors were out and about, looking around, dealing with tree damage, exclaiming about the craziness of the storm.

All in all, a wacky and entertaining day - though I am sad to see those nice, big tree go. Now...onward to this Level 2 course.

Vote. Seriously. VOTE.

I usually try to keep my political views to a very selective audience. Because, really, who needs more heated debate? But I can't hold back. I've just got to say it now:

Enough said.

Music, Chanting, Eating

We hosted chanting and dinner at our house tonight. Our community is celebrating the 11 days leading up to the birthday of our teacher, Yogi Bhajan. This happens in communities around the world - people gather in homes to chant and share food and then there is a special sadhana, early morning practice on the actual birth date.

Tonight was our night hosting and I spent most of the day cleaning and cooking. I wanted to offer a full meal this time - and it turned out well. I planned and cooked for 20 people and that's about what we had. It was a nice blessing for our home.

In preparation for our guests, Satvinder dressed her stuffed animals in princess costumes.

Puppy Love and Cooler Weather

We made a short visit to Flagstaff and enjoyed the company, relief from the Phoenix inferno and meeting Nonni & Dadaji's new puppy, Rufus!

Little Sponges

Satvinder continually surprises me with the details she picks up from observing us. She notices things that we aren't even aware of and then in her repeating of the actions/behaviors, we see the mirror of ourselves! It is often an eye opener!

Today she demonstrated and exciting skill that she picked up - she took it upon herself to take the laundry off of the clothes line, fold it, and put it away! I didn't even know she could do such things! She told me, "I learned it by watching you!"

The funny? thing was that while she was folding the laundry, she also copied my sighs. She doesn't miss a thing. (sigh.)

Pinky Eye View

Satvinder had fun taking pictures around the house today. Here are a few examples of what she sees and feels is photo-worthy.

Another Good Read

I just finished the book Three Cups of Tea, a true story about Greg Mortenson, a American guy who was inspired to raise money and build schools for kids in Pakistan and Afganistan. His efforts prove to be a powerful and effective approach to encouraging peace through providing education and relating to humanity.

I really found it inspiring and interesting because he did not, personally, have money or experience for doing this. His challenges were many and there were lots of wild stories along the way but the rewards have come and so many people have been helped in amazing ways.

Thanks to my niece, Jessi (who is newly stationed in South Africa with the Peace Corp - YAY for amazing journeys!) and my mother-in-law, Gurdarshan, for recommending this book to me. I hope many will read it and be inspired to wage peace in their own ways.

Shocking! Amazing!

Satvinder, who one week ago would scream if water touched her face, has now started to swim and dunk under water and JUMP into the pool, thanks to the patient guidance of my brother, Bill. Each day, they make impressive progress.

Who IS that kid?

Look at her go!

Sweet faces; nice places

The Last Few Days

There has been lots of family in town over this past week or so in Austin - people coming and going from all over. Here are just a few pics of a few people doing a few things.

At the Lake

The girls insisted they weren't having fun, for a while. Eventually, they relaxed and began to enjoy themselves. These were their "not having fun" faces.

Brother Bill is always an excellent lake host

Zach had a great time on the tube

Emma was not so into it. "Thumbs up" actually was her signal for "SLOWER!"

This was Satvinder's first experience at the Lake and first time on a boat. Once she got used to it, she liked it a lot.
